Watch what people do when they think no one’s watching, love. That’s how you’ll know who they really are.
But sometimes, I supposed, a girl just had to be her own hero.
“Course, my mama says it’s not what a person has, but how he treats others, so I don’t know.”
“Oh my GOD!” I shrieked, realizing I was as naked as a jaybird. I looked around wildly for something to hide my nakedness, grabbing the shirt at the top of my open suitcase and attempting to cover as much of myself as possible.
misguidedly blamed him for things a child should never be blamed for. They treated him wretchedly—
“Grayson tried so hard. All his life, he… Well, it didn’t matter. Nothing he did was deemed good enough.”
my bride
She’d whipped me!
Kira’s men was probably more accurate.
“please abstain from daring my wife to pull dangerous stunts on moving equipment.”
She blinked up at me with those gorgeous eyes, suddenly looking uncertain and very young.

Charlotte, who must have returned while I was upstairs showering, was on his heels. “It was meant to be helpful,” she called after him. “You may be her father,” he said quietly, his voice deadly calm, “but you will never lay a hand on my wife again. Am I clear?”
If I needed to, how would I even fight for my woman now? My woman.

wife
She was mine.
I had a wife to look for and some errands to do.
I love my wife.
Finally, he reached for my hand, squeezing it tightly in his as he choked out, “Like…my…own son.”
For a moment, Walter didn’t say anything. When he finally spoke, his voice was quiet but steady. “When I was lying at the bottom of the stairs, you know what I kept thinking?” I shook my head. “I kept thinking, please don’t let me leave this world without telling that boy how I feel about him.”
And maybe, while I was working, something would come to me regarding a way to win my wife back.
