He’s the textbook definition of cantankerous, a frequent scowler and an all-around prickly human. Even from here, half a block away, I can sense the waves of indignation rolling off of him. It’s a steady stream, ebbing away from friendly and moving toward profoundly annoyed.
“Bridget,” he says. “You’re late.”
“Good morning, neighbor,” I answer, cheerily lacing the greeting. “How are you? It’s November 1st and we’re officially in the holiday season, my friend!”
His response is a scoff. Next, a grunt. Then, in dramatic conclusion, as the epitome of Perpetua...

Books have always been my happy place. As the one true joy and a constant fixture in my life, they’ve loved me back unconditionally and unwaveringly over the years.

When he finally turns away and breaks our staring contest, just as he reaches the door, I notice his lips tugging up in the corner. A hint of a smile–small, but there–briefly brightens his weary face. It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.
“Not many people give me a reason to be happy.” A pause, then, “But I think you might. Maybe.”
He leans forward and keeps his voice low as he whispers, “Careful, Brownie. That mouth will get you in trouble one day.”
I’d love a rolling ladder. It’s on my list. One day.”
“I could, uh…” I pause, hand rubbing the nape of my neck. The skin is warm, flared with heat. “I could make you one,” I blurt out before I can think twice.
She’s like a supernova, an explosion of color and light. A beauty you can’t look away from. It holds you captive and you’re thankful, eager to enjoy every second you get to be in her presence.
“What does scare you? Besides the height thing.”
“Being alone, I think. I love people, but I enjoy my quiet time of solitude after a day full of interacting. There’s this fear I’m going to go home to an empty house every night for the rest of my life, though. And I want someone to just be in the quiet with me. The kind of relationship where you don’t have to talk all the time. You don’t have to ask questions. You can sit side-by-side on the couch in silence and be the happiest person in the world, because you’re there together.”
Take your time, princess. I’m here.”
I’m content with dying alone, an old maid surrounded by dogs. Men can fuck off.”
“I love you so very much, sweetheart. You don’t have to say it back. I just wanted you to know. My heart is yours. Keep it, please. Don’t ever return it.”
