The Higgs field is the crucial piece of the Standard Model that gives other elementary particles their masses. Electrons and quarks, and even the exchange particles, have no intrinsic mass in the Standard Model theory but acquire their masses from the resistance they experience as they move through the all-pervading Higgs field.
