Mehl, et al., titled “Eavesdropping on Happiness: Well-Being is Related to Having Less Small Talk and More Substantive Conversations,” found a meaningful correlation between the depth of conversation quality and the depth of personal connection: when you force yourself out of small talk and into subjects that matter to you, people tend to build trust faster.
