My heart is often iron, but it melts for the broken.
“I was born too late to explore the seas, and I am too wicked to explore heaven, so the stars will have to do.
“That must have been for my sentence.” I roll my eyes. “Come, come, Darrow, am I not allowed to be the best at anything?” “Fine. You can be the most despised,” I say. “Thank you, contrition at last.”
“I am not a monster,” she says. “Must be your conscience you heard, because I didn’t call you one.”
Human history is proof of one thing: violence builds empires. Violence is worshiped, respected, heeded.
“You afraid now, Lyria?” “I been afraid since I can remember. But I ain’t giving up.”
“He’d say I judged my own worth too much by the people I kept around me. I was poor in those days. I’m quite rich now, I think.”
