“No, she was in a car accident six months ago. Her mother was killed in the wreck, and Noemi’s vocal cords were damaged. She’s mute and, from what I hear, pretty traumatized. No clue why her father nominated her. She’s hardly been seen outside of her house since it happened.”
What a beautiful disaster. Him. My life. Our impending marriage.
I don’t need to coerce sex from a woman when plenty of others give it freely.”
My hopes and dreams meant no more than the breeding ability of livestock.
I wasn’t one to shy away from sin. In fact, I was rather fond of several of the deadliest sort, but envy had never been much of a problem. Until now.
I don’t really care what you call it, so long as those pretty lips end up panting my name.”
He didn’t pull away or react in any way except to chuckle lightly. A sound like warm whiskey poured over ice—both able to warm my belly in strange, alluring ways.
“Protective is one thing. I get the sense this is more, and I think I ought to know if it’s going to be a problem.”
but the thought of anyone but me laying a finger on Noemi made me itch with the need to paint her entire family tree in shades of red.
“No, I said turnabout was fair play. That means if I stray, you can, too. But for right now, there’s only one set of legs I want between, and as long as that’s the case, I expect the same in return.”

“It’s a lot. And I never should have told you about the burning man. That’s just this life, you know that, right? Just because he lights people on fire doesn’t mean he’s going to hurt you.”
Mom was the rainbow in a stormy sky. She was the sugar in lemonade and the pink stretchy bandage that made everything better.
A few subtle undertones can color the way someone views the world,” he pushed. “So can cruelty. That puts things into perspective more than anything, focusing a person’s priorities and redefining loyalties.”
“Duty to my family. The acquisition of power. Sultry green eyes and a fiery disposition. You pick a day; I’ll give you a reason. It changes by the minute.”
“You look good enough to eat, Noemi.” He brought his lips to my ear. “And I’m famished.”
“Holy crap, Pip. You trying to get us blackout drunk?” I gaped at her but couldn’t fully quash the smile teasing the corners of my lips. “Hey, if we’re lucky, we’ll forget how fucked up our family is.”
Bishop had called me obsessed, but that wasn’t it. My desire for her went beyond that. It was a chemical in my blood, overriding all logic and reason.
“Better to get what I needed than what I thought I wanted.”
