Sounds like I’m about to become a creature of the night. It could be a good thing. After all, in the dark there are more places to hide.
“You’re a pig.” He stands up and steps into my space. “No, I’m a wolf. And you’re a sheep that wandered into the wrong pasture.”
He can’t break someone who’s already broken.
“You will never put yourself in danger again,” he murmurs into my ear. “No one hurts what’s mine, not even you.”
I realize a very inconvenient thing. I’ve claimed her as mine. And I’m never letting her go.
His dark eyes meet mine, and I know I’m right. This was a goodbye. He’s going to send me home, and he knows I’ll never forgive him for it. This is all over. It’s a bitter, painful end to something that was never destined to be a love story.
If someone ever wrote the story of my life, it would be written in blood. Sometimes when I close my eyes, all I can see is me bathed in it.
“I don’t want a kept woman. I want a partner. An equal by my side. That’s you. If I’m about to become a king, you will be my queen.”
