The deep divide between punk culture and all others was man-made and arbitrary. Some punks were deeply invested in keeping those divisions unbridgeable. I always believed, like C. P. Snow suggested, that much gain could come from bridging the gaps and eliminating the litmus-test mentality from the genre.
Punk culture, from my perspective, always depended on a breaking of the expected rules, so I always found it odd to hear from critics that we somehow failed them in not being predictably punk enough.
