Jefferson’s own interest in the subject went beyond the political, and the man seems to have had a keen personal interest in the quantified life. One of his fancies was buying custom-made odometers for his carriages that measured how far the vehicle travelled as he criss-crossed the country on government errands. The odometers fitted into the spokes of the carriage wheel and counted each rotation, letting Jefferson calculate the distance travelled from measurements of the wheel.
