They know that you’re a prize, but they also know the amount of work and effort that goes along with getting and keeping a woman like you.” He grinned. “We’re selfish assholes by nature, so we keep you close, as friends. Doing just enough to make sure we can remain in your orbit but without doing the work.”

“Those girls that smile our way are easy. Again, no effort required, which typically means they’re not worth it in the end. Eventually we grow up, well most do, and realize where we went wrong, but by then, you’re fed up and no longer accessible. Not even as a friend, hence the term, the one that got away.”

“Women never regret falling in love. We regret the side effects of that love. The things that we accept or compromise on to keep it.

“But as amazing as you are, you’re stubborn in so many ways. The life you chose comes with a lot of compromise. I can’t imagine it’s an easy choice being with a man such as yourself,

“We have no control over who we love or how we love them. She’ll never regret loving you, but if you’re not careful she’ll regret how much she has to compromise because she loves you.

Always be sure she doesn’t have to compromise so much that the love feels more of a burden than a blessing.”
