‘That’s good and bad. Let’s just focus on the now. I didn’t eat dinner yet, so if you also didn’t eat dinner yet, perhaps we could somehow find ourselves eating dinner in the same place?’
‘No problem. So, tell me, how was your day? I want to hear the real version, not the glossy, for-the-cameras version.’ Jennifer smiled. ‘Do you really want to hear about my problems?’ Tom leaned forward as best he could over the relaxing ball of cat. ‘Every single one,’ he said.
As Jennifer stood next to Amy, she glanced across the assembled crowd and spotted Matthew Bridges’ dad, holding up an iPad so that someone on the screen could see what was going on.
‘The cat will be jealous,’ Tom said, but his voice had quietened as he leaned close. ‘You can make it up to him later,’ Jennifer said, closing her eyes, taking Tom’s hands, and pulling him close, closer, closest, as the wind rustled through the branches overhead, someone cheered, and somewhere else, Jennifer felt a piece of her broken heart fitting back into place.
