The Girls in Queens

I wished I could tell those girls not to define themselves by the attention, or lack thereof, from the boys, and the men, and the fathers in their lives. I wanted to forgive them for not having the respect for themselves that maybe they ought to have had . . . but how could we have learned to respect ourselves growing up, when no one ever showed us what that meant?
