The next day, when the guards buzzed open my cell and found my body lying cold, no one thought much about it. I watched from the top of the room, a wisp of invisible, pissed-off smoke, as two men carried my corpse away. Just another statistic, another soul who’d never really had a chance. A feather lost in a storm.
Unmade. Something about the way Sunny said it gave me a strange sort of déjà vu. I had a sudden vision of a glowing cauldron of white-hot fire, and a whole lot of pain. Maybe this was Hell after all. Or the station on the way to it.
“The Maker used to create the High Angeli mates in here, and they were formed with their wings outstretched, or at least that’s what I’ve heard.
Oh, crap, I heard it screaming. Were those tortured souls in Hell? I wanted to touch it, like it drew me in. Was that Hell reaching out for me? Why did I find Hell attractive? Is Hell even single?”
He frowned, pulling one more feather away from my hair, and the back of his hand stroked down my cheek. I was pretty sure he hadn’t meant to do that since he made a face I’d only ever seen at a ghost pepper-eating contest, and held his hand out in front of him like he wanted to cut it off.
“You might need to cut more slowly, beautiful one. I sensed your pain; I wish I could bear it for you. Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa.”
“Gavriel has Arabella,” I murmured. “She’s not dead, right?” She was in a room, which creeped me out more than a little. The whole setup was either Sleeping Beauty or Crypt Keeper—I couldn’t decide.
“Arabella. The Beautiful One.” It chimed softly, so I finished the name in the angelic tongue, whispering it so softly, I was sure she wouldn’t hear the words. “Useless Scrap of the Beautiful One.”
“Leave. Or stand by me, as I save the soul who will be my mate.” His eyes welled up with boundless pain and an even deeper
determination. “Though she will never know it.”
“That’s perfect. See, I told you. I’m Nothing, a Useless Scrap.” Sighing, I left as the naming chime rang out even louder.
