I loved it—really, truly loved it—when they underestimated me.
“Don’t skewer yourself with that stick up your ass,” she retorted,
Crazy old bitch, I thought, affectionately.
Oh, sun fucking take me.
I liked to watch it when they realized death was coming for them.
I didn’t cry. No. I was fucking furious. Sadness was a futile, weak emotion.
This, to me, sounded like bullshit.
“You stabbed me.” “You grabbed me.” “I was trying to save your life.”
“I ask for an apology, and I get threats.” “I’m sorry I didn’t aim higher.”
Raihn stood over me, one hand on his hip,
You’re a demanding little thing, aren’t you?”
One day love became not an offering of safety, but a reminder of everything cruel and dangerous in the world.
“What in the seven fucking hells is wrong with you?”
“What do you want me to do? Crawl into your lap?” “I won’t even dignify that with a response,”
This was a mistake. All of it. I should’ve just bled out in the greenhouse.
Maybe it’ll be more satisfying this time.” I cocked my head, frowned. “Do women say that to you often?”
“Get away from me,” I hissed. And he said quietly, “No.”
“Stop.” “This close?” “Back. Up. Raihn.” He looked me dead in the eye. “No,” he said. And took one more step.
Raihn’s wings were spread, looking as if they were made of the night itself, a million variations of purple and red and black and rust. Almost pretty enough to distract from the sheer fury on his face.
Let them be a little afraid of me, for once.
People did all kinds of nonsensical things when blinded by good sex.
“He deserved to go out the window,” I said. “He did,” she agreed.
Oh, he was definitely drunk.
“And what is that?” He said it like I’d just presented him with a fluffy pink dog.
“Fuck you.”
I refused so vehemently that he put his hands up in an apparent plea for mercy—and
“I have my ways.” I could hear the smirk in Raihn’s voice. “Very dangerous, very clever, very impressive ways.”
I wasn’t about to validate his preening, but… it was impressive.
“Why were you following me?” He raised his hands. “Easy, viper.”
That fucking face. It’s just so… so…”
“Do you want me to say I’m sorry now? Because I’m not.”
“I have no regrets. I’d throw you out that window again.” “Oh, I know, princess. I know.”
“What? Like what you see?”
Goddess fucking damn him,
“Oh, it is!” she insisted. It was not.
“There’s no bonding like bonding over murder,” Raihn said dryly.
“There she is.”
He leaned close enough that I felt his words skitter over my cheek. I didn’t know why I didn’t move. “I have plenty of self-control, Oraya,” he murmured.
You have so many different versions of yourself.” “Oh, they’re all me.”
“Ugh. That’s disgusting.” “Disgusting and amazing.” “Just disgusting.”
“You have balls, princess,” he said. “I will give you that.”
His expression softened. “You’re safe, Oraya,” he murmured in my ear.
