Lenora’s eyes went clear for an instant, and she locked her hands onto Rory’s upper arms. “Two were one, and one is yours.”
“Listen to me Aurora, do not let him fool you; his darkness is poison. Only the golden child can save you.”
“She’s not supposed to be there. He’s bright because his darkness hides.” Her eyes locked on Cora. “You shouldn’t be there!”
Adila gave her a small smile. “Your soul is a beautiful shade of grey, Miss Raven. I will see you soon enough.”
He stood out against the rest of the room, not because he was the king, but because he was in vivid color.
She didn’t know much about the notorious Umbra King, but what she did know was ten years ago she watched him murder her sister.
She didn’t want redemption. She wanted retribution.
Shadows cloaked her, and while they weren’t dark enough to prevent her from seeing, they were dark enough the others wouldn’t notice her. He helped her.
“Am I your villain, Miss Raven?”
His eyes bounced between hers. “Why do you assume this is your dream and not mine?” The look on his face and the sound of his voice made her body sing. “Why would it be yours?” The air was charged with sexual tension, and when he spoke again, she fought for air. “Because here, you are mine.”
His anger was barely leashed when he said, “Who did this to you?” He visually inspected the bruises on her limbs, touching each one with his golden gaze.
His chest heaved once before he stepped back. “The next time someone lays a finger on you, their death belongs to me.” The panic melted from her body, and her mind cleared. “Why?” “Because no one hurts you but me,”
“Your pain belongs to me.”
His nightmares. He’d had one about drowning the night he found Rory soaked to the bone in the hallway.
“What do you see when you look at me?” “An asshole,” she replied.
“She’s my Aeternum,” Caius said as he slammed open Samyaza’s door. “Did you know?”
“Her safety matters,” Caius growled. “Do not keep things from me again.” Sam’s voice was hard when he said, “Control your temper, and I won’t.”
“How did you fit a banana in your pants?” “My pants already carry something much larger.” Sam grinned as he peeled the fruit and took a large bite.
But I also never imagined she would lock me away for a crime I didn’t commit.”
Shadows were crashing through the halls with his unchecked emotions, and it was all he could do to keep from bringing the entire palace to the ground.
“I need you to wake up, baby.”
“You think so little of me that I would deny you anything right now?
“Don’t touch her.” When he said the last line, his eyes were on Asher.
“I’ll miss you enough for both of us,” she whispered in his ear, and he nodded into her shoulder. “I may not remember you,” he whispered back. “But when I see your face or hear your name, my soul will know you’re good.”
He fisted the back of her dress and pulled her closer, his lips brushing against her ear as they walked. “I would fuck you until the only name you remembered was mine. Do not tease me, Miss Raven.”
“I cannot control my body’s reactions, but I can control my actions. You will never touch me again,”
would set this entire realm ablaze to keep you safe, and if you think I’m bluffing, you haven’t been paying attention.”
“It was inevitable. Your soul calls to mine and mine to yours. We couldn’t fight this if we tried.”
“You speak as though we are soulmates. I don’t love you, Caius, and if you love me, you fall in love too quickly.”
They say trauma makes people funnier.
“Despite what you think, you are good in your own way. Everyone does bad things. Yes, some are worse than others and deserve a fate worse than death, but most are only trying to navigate life and all it throws at them. Never discount yourself for your flaws.”
His lip tugged to the side. “I will fall first, Miss Raven, and we both know it.”
Her lips parted. “Most men don’t want their women dressed scandalously.” “Most men want to control women.” He pushed his chair back and stood. “If you want to walk through the realm naked, you will do so, and I will admire you the entire way.”
“Never lock me out again. I will always make your tears my own. We’re in this together.”
“Undo it!” she screamed as she ripped the document to shreds. Her hand clasped around his arm, making him look at her. “I love you, Caius. I love you. You can’t do this.”
