“You don’t enjoy a little heat, Madison?” Fucking hell.
“I’m being neighborly, Madison, you should really quit this hot and cold thing you got going on.”
“Pet names mean nothing if you don’t put a ring on her hand.”
A raspy chuckle sounded next to me, and I looked down to realize Garrett had pulled his hoodie over me. “You’re shivering so hard you’re shaking the cement.” “Asshole, I was not.”
“I’m pretty sure she asked you to leave.”
Garrett hadn’t just come to my defense; he’d also somehow known the two things in the entire world that helped me relax: coffee and fuzzy socks.
don’t mind, I like fixing things.” He shrugged, a hint of a smirk gracing his lips almost faster than I could see, and I suddenly realized what his earlier look had meant.
Why did it feel like every time I climbed an inch up, something kicked me in the face until I slid back a foot?
“You sure? I could always go break the fucker’s nose if it’ll bring a smile to your face.”
“You must be one hell of a mom for that boy to love you that much.”
“Not sure how long you were here before I noticed you, but I’ve been here for about twenty minutes. I didn’t want to wake you, but I also didn’t want to leave you alone.”
“True or false. You came out here with an apology meal as a ploy to check and make sure I was still alive.”
“True.”
Not once did he break eye contact with me as we each tipped our heads back.
He winked over his shoulder, pulling the door open. “And you didn’t get all the icing off your chin.”
Garrett’s face softened as he shook my child’s hand and leaned down. “Never, and I mean never, apologize for defending your mom. You were right to yell at me.”
“Text me the address. I’ll go. I’ll even bring him home afterward. It’s not like it’s out of my way.” He smiled slowly, and it was sinful.
“Give me your phone.” What I should’ve done was scrunch my nose and told him I don’t take orders from men towering over me. What I should not have done was inhale his clean, male scent and hand my phone over without so much as a word.
He’d put himself in my phone as Sugar Daddy.
The man had no idea I would be here, yet he’d shown up. For Jamie.
“You made this?” He nodded, pulling out a second, partially finished one in the same color. “This one is turning out better. It’s way harder than you made it look.”
You’d just gag, and I gotta tell you, baby, gagging doesn’t bother me.”
“What are you doing?” “Helping you.”
“Turn around so I can wash your hair.”
My curls are picky, and I have an entire routine, and… Why are you smiling at me?”
“Shut up and let me take care of you. I know what I’m doing.”
The brush of his fingers against the tops of my ears sent a shiver racing down my spine, and I closed my eyes, allowing myself to enjoy a moment of weakness.
“Thank you, Garrett.” “Don’t thank me, baby. I got you.”
tucked me into bed, spoon-fed me children’s acetaminophen, and even retrieved the bucket to set on my nightstand.
“I’m gonna fucking kill him.”
Garrett rested his head on top of mine, finally reaching over to cage my hand in his. “You are the strongest woman I’ve ever met, Maddie.”
“You all right, J-man?” Jamie’s head bobbed up and down, but he didn’t attempt to move from his spot. “I’m proud of you.”
“I can’t look at your face without seeing the ghost of his fingerprints and remembering what they looked like on you, without remembering how you look when your eyes fog over in fear. It’ll be seared into my mind until the day I die.”
“I think Garrett loves you.”
“He came and saved you. He didn’t even put clothes on first, Mom.” “And my eyeballs appreciated it,”
“I’m glad he trusted me enough to call but fuck if it didn’t destroy me. For the rest of my life, I will never forget the way that boy’s voice shook as he begged me to save you.”
“I wanted to kiss you the moment I opened my eyes and had to bat your wild hair out of my face to see you snoring beside me.”
A large finger pressed on my lips, stopping the reply from exiting my mouth. Taking his time pulling it back, he pointed to the bathroom. “Shower. I’ll whip something up for you too.”
“She’d like a coffee with one sugar and three creams.”
“Girl, you’re in so much trouble.” I was. I really was. Because I was pretty sure I might be in love with that man.
“I knew tasting your lips would be amazing, but if I’d have known it’d be fucking life altering, I’d have kissed you a long time ago.”
“You’re a fucking treasure, Maddie. A goddamn crown jewel, and everyone who meets you sees it, including your bar friend. I saw you sitting out there tonight with him, and my jealousy got the best of me. I can’t stand the thought of another man claiming you before I’m able to make you mine.” Could your heart grow too
“We can check our schedules. Maddie works Saturday evenings, but if you’re okay with it, I have no problem bringing Jamie,” he said, directing the last part at me.
Sugar Daddy: If Jamie beats me again because I’m distracted checking my phone, I’ll spank the shit outta you.
“What if I said I came to watch you work because I couldn’t stand the thought of going an entire day and night without seeing you?”
Sugar Daddy: Why are you glaring at my front door? Me: It’s mocking me. Why are you spying on me through it?
