What Lovers Do

Was I that blind? Is a guy with a job and routine hygiene the definition of sexy? I think it might be.

I sometimes miss the woman I married, but I never miss the woman I divorced.”

Our marriage crumbled because she predicted our future on assumptions that weren’t based on anything but her fears and insecurities. If two people speak at the same time, nothing is heard. If two people listen at the same time, nothing is spoken.

It’s unfortunate, just incredibly sad, that when she finally found her voice, she used it to end our marriage.

“We are all one event away from losing. Losing our minds. A job. A loved one. A marriage. A dream. We are all one event away from losing ourselves. Stability and sanity are not human qualities. They are not genetic traits. They are a state of mind.

“Friends don’t hold grudges. Friends know they’re not competing with anyone else for your love and trust. Friends don’t get jealous. That’s what lovers do. You said we were friends.”

Even our stare-offs are competitive. He waits. And I surrender. I no longer care to fight with him; I only fight for him. “I love you.”
