“I want…” Her breathing was labored, fighting head against heart. “Say it.” “You.”
Highlights of gold in her hair, sparkling in her amber eyes, flaring in the crimson of her leathers. He couldn’t help but marvel at how well she embodied her kingdom’s emblem. As though she were born of the Phoenix.
“Because she is not Tauria Stagknight.”
“Your heart never has to be sacrificed for us to take back our kingdom.”
“Your confidence is admirable though misplaced if you think I don’t see your attempt to play cards that won’t work in your favor, Samara. You needn’t feel in the shadow of anyone, but if it settles your mind, the Fenstead queen is as good as betrothed. Don’t test me with that again.” His hand fell limp as he took a step back.
“To understand. Because as your friends…we can’t sit by and watch you make the mistake of a lifetime. And for your kind, that is a long, torturous existence.”
“A mate is a match of the power we have within. It’s not always felt in the heart.”
“As fate would have it, I ended up exactly where I needed to be. Here—for you.”
“A promise is only hollow words when actions don’t hold true. If he loved you, he would never want to put you in any line of danger.”
“You will make a gracious queen, Tauria Stagknight. One who will reclaim and restore what was taken.”
He wanted it all. Her laughter, her smile. He was a selfish bastard for thinking as much, but her happiness…he wanted to own that too.
“You have never been my ward. Or my subject. Or my princess. You are my equal, Tauria. In every way, you shine brighter than the moon I’ve watched change in the sky since you left, knowing it was the one thing we could look upon all the same. Is that pitiful of me?”
“I wanted it to be you,” she confessed, knowing she wouldn’t get another chance. Knowing it didn’t matter anymore. “I wanted to take it all back with you by my side at the end of it all.”
You are a need, Tauria. Like air to breathe and a heart to bleed.
I want you to know that I would go to war for you. Because you are Fenstead, but you are also High Farrow. And no matter what you choose, I am yours. Even if you cannot be mine.”
My mate, her mind chanted, rejoiced. My mate. My mate.
They were mated.
“I still have the world to give you in this one. Hold tight,
It was in love and loyalty that they would raise the greatest army Ungardia had ever seen to fight back against evil. The hearts who couldn’t love—she mourned for them.
For now, she would return. To them, to him…she must return.
“We didn’t have enough time, Faythe,” he whispered, leaning his forehead to hers and pinching his eyes, holding her close as if it would return the warmth to her cooling body. “I promise to stand by you. Until the end of days. We’ll fight…we’ll fight it all together. Just please come back to me.”
Then her eyes slid to his, sapphire met gold, and the world… It stopped.
