It’s not that I wanted to misbehave, but the most interesting things were always forbidden.
My curiosity was a demon that lurked inside me, awake and watching.
“You’ll go on,” Mama said. “We all will. It seems impossible now, but it happens whether we want it to or not.”
“It hurts because we love him. That’s the balance of life, hard as it is to accept. A heart open to joy is a heart vulnerable to sorrow. There’s no family without loss, no love without pain.”
“Whatever else is taken from you, never lose hope. Even if you see how dark the world can be, choose to believe it could be better.”
You can never see what you don’t know. That’s the point—you don’t fucking know it.
Suffering changes you. Either you become cold and bitter, divorced from human feeling. Or the opposite occurs, and you can’t bear to inflict the pain you’ve felt on anyone else.
Perhaps that’s what death was, an endless fall through nothingness.
Even if you see how dark the world can be … choose to believe it could be better.
Anger fades. Love only grows.
“Every mark on you is something you survived to get back to me. You have never looked more beautiful.”
Every part of her was precious, every part was perfect—her strengths and her flaws, her heart and her mind. “I love you,” I said. “When I thought I missed the chance to tell you that, I’ve never regretted anything more.”
“I should have chosen you from the beginning,” she sobbed. “I thought there were all these things keeping us apart. I should have believed in us first, over anything else.”
“I worship you, princess. I always have.”
“You think you could ever be ugly to me? You are me. You’re everything I love, everything I care about.”
“The ones we love aren’t lost to us forever. Love endures past anything else. It’s the strongest energy in the universe. It changes and flows, but can never be destroyed.”
I couldn’t remember a moment when he hadn’t been magnetic to me, the only color in a world of gray.
Some moments burn in your mind and create a light you can look at forever. Memories that never fade, but only get brighter each time you visit them, like the place on a brass statue a thousand hands have touched.
“One heart, one mind, one soul. What is joined by choice can never be torn apart.”
If the dead feel anything, it’s the joy of the living. We must glow like lanterns to them, through the screen that separates us all.
