He protected what was his, and as far as he was concerned, I fell into that bracket. I was his host, and if I died, he’d be sent back to the hell I’d unwittingly liberated him from.

If the Order of Yaga found out, it wouldn’t end well for me. They monitored the eldritch rifts. Made sure that the monsters who lived there stayed on their side, and if, God forbid, something did come through, they had rift walkers to catch and take it back. Rift walkers like me. Individuals who could see the residue an eldritch monster left behind and track it. My kind were the only ones with this ability. The monsters were invisible to the human eye, and supernaturals couldn’t see them for what they truly were. Their brains distorted the monsters into something else.

I sense the carnal desire rising inside you. I have the tools with which to satisfy you. A fair trade, don’t you think? A symbiosis.”

“You will tell her that we’re considering her terms. By the time she realizes we have no intention of letting her go, it’ll be too late. She’ll belong to the Order. Because there is no cure for what August Vera is becoming, and for that, we should all be grateful.” Panic blooms in my chest. “What? What are you—” “Protocol 11ABC activated.” The world goes dark.
