The Washingtons were a fairly close-knit family and well liked in the community. They were active members of Zion Hill Baptist Church and kept the kids on a rather short leash. My grandfather was a deacon in the church, and my grandmother sang in the choir. They attended services before and after the regular morning services, followed by afternoon and evening services on Sunday.
