I don’t like making people feel like shit about themselves regardless of what they do with their time and body. For somebody so willing to offer me hers, she’s judgmental about her roommate’s antics.
When you spend a long time wondering where you fit in, you hold on a little tighter to the people who make you feel like the perfect sized puzzle piece in their jigsaw puzzle.
“DJ—” “It’s Danny to you.”
I know I was an asshole on Friday, but I really didn’t mean it. I’ll do whatever it takes to prove that to you.”
“I don’t like people calling me Danny normally,” I admit, settling in. “But I like it coming from you.”
“So,” I prod, “tell me about that new book you started. You basically blew me off last night because you said it was getting good.” Her eyes widen. “You want to hear about the book I’m reading?” I sip my drink. “If that’s what makes you happy, then yes.” She stares. I stare back. Slowly, she shakes her head. “Okay. Well, it’s a brother’s best friend romance…” I listen to every word, hanging onto the way her expression lightens as she tells me all about the story.
I’ve already been claimed, even if the person who has me doesn’t know it yet.
If stretching out at a weird angle to make sure she saw me across the room when she woke would make her feel secure, I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
Working out? Well, running from my problems is probably as close as I’ve gotten at this point.
“We all want what’s best for you, Sky Sister. And if it takes flying to New York to put a bitch in her place, you know we’ll do it. All of us would.”
Boy. It doesn’t matter that I’ve got a foot and a half on the short woman, I know she could take me down easily. She’d smile as she did it, too.
His eyes go to my lips, and I wonder if he wants to see another smile, or if there’s another reason. I swallow. Force my lips to stretch upward again. He blows out a breath and starts driving.
“My attention is focused on one person only. I don’t need anybody else.”
“I am! Choose a book from your shelf and I’ll read it. I want to know what you like, Blondie. Let me into that head of yours.”
As soon as I lay down, he wraps his arm around my shoulder and tugs me into his side. He lets out a content sigh. No words. Just a sigh.
What’s hotter than a guy who reads? Nothing.
“Anytime you want me to do that, text me.” “What if you’re at practice?” “Coach will have to deal.” “At a game?” “I’ll happily let the other team win.”
“You’re such a—” A throat clears from behind her, cutting off whatever insult she was about to call me.
“Can I ask you something?” Anything. Fucking anything. “Of course you can.”
Danny doesn’t give up. “What do I need to do? Do you want me to get on my knees and beg?” He does just that, dropping to his knees and looking up at me with pleading eyes. He doesn’t care about the audience watching my turmoil unravel before them.
