A really hot mate wouldn't have hurt either. Actually, no. I'd gotten a hot mate, but he'd turned out to be an asshole. Thanks but no thanks.
he actually had a shirt on for once. Pity, my brain whispered.
I looked up at him as he held his hand out to me. I reached up to take it but paused. “You’re just going to use it to flip me over your back or something, aren’t you?” “Maybe. I wouldn’t trust my own word.” A slight hint of amusement played across his lips.
He paused as if waiting for me to interrupt him, but I was just shocked by all this new information—and because I'd never heard him say so many words at once before.
He seemed to be allergic to wearing a decent amount of clothing, no matter the occasion. The number of times I’d wandered downstairs to find him standing in the kitchen in just sweats or jeans was bordering on ridiculous. I should have been desensitized by this point, but with a body like that, I doubted I’d get used to it anytime soon.
Then a slow smirk crossed his mouth. “Nice howl, by the way." I blushed, but his tone was light enough that I didn’t feel too bad about it. "It was my first one." "Not bad. Though I bet you could howl louder under the right circumstances." I swallowed, my mouth suddenly dry. "Maybe you could show me."
Stella made a choking noise, her nose wrinkling. “You do realize you’re talking about my brother, right?” "And we'd all very much like to be your sister," Carly said with a laugh.
Now I was going to be tormented by dreams of Kaden too. Really graphic, detailed dreams. Damn, why couldn't he have waited another few seconds to wake me up?
“You know,” I said, eyes still closed, “I really don’t like this.” “That makes two of us,” Kaden said dryly.
“I’m unmated, not celibate."
He huffed out a breath, caught off guard, standing as stiff as a board as I hugged him. “What the hell are you doing?” “We call them hugs, Kaden,” I said. “They’re used to show gratitude among people who aren’t emotionally stunted.” “You’re insufferable,” Kaden said, but he didn’t push me away either.
“What’s that?” I asked as Kaden brought it closer to me. “No, thank you. I don't do snakes." Kaden gave me a hard look. “Don’t be a chicken. Hold out your arm.”
"Then he's a fool. From the moment we met, I knew there was so much more to you."
"You're the only one who's ever really seen me," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "Even when I came to you as a broken wolf who didn't truly know herself."
He reached up and took a piece of my red hair, then tucked it back behind my ear. "Little wolf, you were never broken, only beaten and bruised. All you needed was someone to believe in you."
He took my face in his hands, gazing into my eyes. "I need you to hide, and I need you to go now. I care about you too much to lose you."
"I care about you too," I said, between rushed, frantic kisses. Neither one of us could seem to stop. "But I'm still going to fight. I won't let anyone die for me while I hide away."
