“Your anger is intense. I like it.”
“He can’t take the throne. It won’t have him.”
“Don’t you understand?” I whisper. “You didn’t just take the crown. You took my life. You killed me.” Sebastian squeezes his eyes shut. “I love you.”
“Whether you know it or not, you are a gift to that court. Stop thinking of yourself as a curse.”
I swallow hard, thinking of what Finn said in my dream after I’d taken the potion. He said he’d found me in the mortal realm two years ago, and instead of trying to trick me out of my power, he’d worked on finding another way. Not that it made a difference.
“Stop it. Stop thinking that this world would be better off without you.”
Before I know what’s happening, Finn spins me around and presses me against the wall. He stares down at me, his silver eyes hard. “But you did. You took the potion, and in doing so, you salvaged one beautiful thing in a world full of ugliness. I, for one, will never be sorry for that.”
“Aren’t you, like, hundreds of years old? Why are you acting like a spoiled child who doesn’t want to share his toys?” His grin is smug, and his gaze is pure wicked intention as he looks me over slowly. “I don’t consider you a toy, Princess, but if you’d like to play, all you have to do is ask.”
“I loved the male I thought you were. Twice. And both were a lie.”
Maybe that would be for the best. Finn frowns at me, and I’m suddenly grateful that he can’t read my thoughts.
“I think there’s a connection between us that I don’t have an explanation for.”
Lifting a tentative hand to my face, Finn swallows. His fingers brush my cheek so lightly it could be the breeze. “I feel it too, you know. This connection between us. This . . . awareness of you.”
“Use your thumb to stop me from speaking again, and I will bite it.”
“Gods above and below,” he breathes. “Is this even real?” “Does that matter?” I purr. Suddenly he sits up, and I grin in delight at the heat of him coming so close. His gaze darts to the bed, then back to me. “What is this?” “Don’t worry about her.” I’m annoyed. I want his focus. His whole attention on me, not that girl in the bed.
“I thought I was dreaming.” He stares at me for a minute; then all at once that spooked, worried expression falls away and his mouth twists into a lopsided grin. “You thought you were dreaming? What else do we do in your dreams, Princess?” I grab a pillow and throw it at him.
There’s a story about Mab. That she was captured once, locked in an iron room that nullified her power, yet she was still able to send her shadow self to destroy the guards and free herself from that prison.”
I shake my head, still staring at it. “I don’t really know, but I think it’s Juliana’s hair.” Finn barks out a laugh. “You cut off Juliana’s hair?” “I thought it was a dream.” His chest shakes in silent laughter. “You thought you were dreaming, so you let yourself slice off her hair,
“Right here. I promise I’ll wake you before your shadow self can seduce me.” His words are laced with mischief, and I can’t help but smile.
“Next time you straddle me,” he murmurs, “wake up first. I want all of you, not just some dark and twisted secret corner of your mind.”
Because he’s not you. Because I can’t stop thinking about our kiss or the way you comforted me last night. Because though my bond with Sebastian might heighten the things I feel about and with him, none of it compares to the way I feel when I’m close to you.
I frown. The last time I drank faerie wine at a party, I ended up drugged and in a shower with Finn. “Oh really?” Misha says, eyes bright and lips curving.
I nudge him with my elbow. “I’m sorry I don’t stroke your ego to your liking.” He rakes his gaze over me. “It seems I find you irresistible nonetheless.”
“Having feelings for one person doesn’t negate what you feel for someone else.”
“I’m not interested in pretending I don’t want you, that I don’t think about you constantly. It’s insulting to us both.”
“I want you so much, Abriella. More than I ever thought was possible. More than I should admit. But as long as you’re bonded to him, you’ll never be completely mine.” He lifts his gaze and locks his silver eyes on mine. “And I am just as selfish as the males who loved Queen Gloriana. I don’t want pieces of you. I want all of you, and I won’t share.”
The High Priestess of the shadow fae is, in a word, a bitch.
I close my eyes and feel my feet lift off the ground, and over the hush in the clearing, the trees seem to whisper Queen.
Finally I can make a difference. Finally I have the power to help.
“I feel you. Despite your efforts to shut me out, I feel you. And I feel you falling in love with him.”
“I will be by your side,” he says, cupping my face in one big hand, “as long as you’ll let me. Wherever you are.”
“I’ll be okay. This is what I was made for.” Those words make me flinch.
“Princess,” he growls. “Please tell me you didn’t choose a physical assault over a magical one because you were worried about me.” “Of course I was worried about you,” I snap. “Why should I risk your life just to save my own?”
“I’m going to pretend you didn’t just say that right after promising me you wouldn’t die.”
“Be safe, My Queen,” he says softly. “And be well. I’ll be gone before you return.”
“In a different world, in a different life, we’d be together,” I whisper. “No kingdoms to rule, no people to save, just you and me and a simple life loving each other.” “But we’re in this world. In this life.” He presses a kiss to the top of my head, and it feels like goodbye. “So I’ll have to save that for my dreams.”
Even if you’re never mine, I will always be entirely yours.
