“Tell me every dark desire, Emilia”—he tilted my face up—“every fantasy you wish to come true.” His fingers lightly stroked the pulse point at my throat before he brought his mouth to mine, the kiss a mere brush of his lips that left me breathless and wanting. He pulled back and slowly ran his hands down my silhouette. “And I vow to make every one of them happen.”
To push past the growing ache in my chest, I thought about my betrothed. Of how my twin had ruined this night for me, too. Instead of sorrow, I focused on the fury, the wrath that had gotten me through my own personal hell. And all emotions, save one, disappeared.
“Some bonds can never be broken, Emilia. And some choices have consequences akin to death. Take it from someone who knows all too well what that’s like.”
“If anyone chains you again, I will become every nightmare mortals have ever had of me and then some.”
“Simply saying ‘I love you; I’m pleased you’re all right’ would have sufficed, too.” A beat of silence passed, and I could practically feel Wrath straining to leash himself.
Wrath, the mighty demon of war, was giving me a sponge bath. And it felt positively divine.
“Hurry along,” he called over his shoulder. “Some of us have yet to indulge in our baser desires. Murder, unfortunately, seems to be an aphrodisiac only for House Wrath. Surprising to none, actually.”
I can’t tell you the last time he engaged in debauchery. I bet he hasn’t even stroked his own cock in a decade. Fucking insulting to demons everywhere.”
Wrath’s gold gaze latched on to mine as he slowly nodded. My whole body tensed as I waited. “You are the one she tried to make me hate for eternity. But she failed.” His grip on me tightened slightly, but not painfully, like he was never going to give me up. Unless I wished to leave. “Remember.”
Wrath pulled me against him, and tucked within the safety of his arms, I hoped perhaps he was right. That even if the curse wasn’t completely broken, maybe things would be better now. He angled his mouth close to me and whispered, “Welcome back, your majesty.”
kept staring at my reflection in the mirror. I was not a witch. I was the goddess of fury.
“Vittoria is the goddess of death, isn’t she?” “Yes.”
“I’m immortal, Emilia.” “And what am I?” If I was a goddess, and we’d had years together in the past, then there was something else he wasn’t telling me. Something I’d get to the bottom of once we were home.
I slowly shook my head, unable to process that my twin was capable of an act so violent, so merciless. She’d murdered her own lover. She’d murdered the witches on our island. The why was still a mystery, but I now knew who. And it sickened me. “You killed those girls.”
“We are hell gods, Emilia. We are the Feared.” My twin looked at me again. “Neither witches, nor shifters, nor even princes of Hell can stand against us when we’re united.
Envy had moved supernaturally fast and now stood beside me. His mouth twisted into a cruel smirk when Vittoria snarled at him, baring her teeth. “Get to the point of your visit so we can continue plotting your demise in peace.”
“And he is her fate. As she is his. ‘As above, so below.’ They are the balance. Light and dark. One fallen from above, and one created in the underworld below.”
My tears slowed as my fingers clasped his. He tugged gently but firmly, helping me to my feet. I took a deep, ragged breath and held on tighter, the last of my tears drying. “Thank you.” He squeezed my hand once before letting go. “Naturally, this benefits me. Don’t be too grateful. I still don’t like you all that much.”
Wrath had… Goddess above. Chills erupted over my body. Wrath, the fearsome general of war, had made himself vulnerable. Likely for the first time in his long existence. And then all hell had broken loose. I exhaled a shaky breath. All these years, he’d been cursed to hate me. Yet he’d fought against it. Tried to latch on to the good. No wonder he was hesitant to give me his heart now. The one time he’d given himself wholly, he’d been punished.
“It didn’t take long to find you, but I’d been too late. Once the witches had you, they moved quickly. The twin witches who had been born? They sacrificed them immediately. Kept their hearts pumping through magic.”
“You’re the First Witch,” I said. “La Prima Strega.”
“Doesn’t matter.” Wrath lifted a shoulder. “I always knew you. And always will. Your soul calls to mine. It’s a feeling of coming home. Of peace. No magic can duplicate it.”
I recognized my sister’s footsteps before I turned to her. “Would you like to exact a little vengeance before I leave?” Her lips slowly tugged upward. “It’s good to have you back, Fury.”
Heat continued to surround us, and I finally managed to crack open an eye. Beautiful burning wings of flame extended from behind Wrath.
