Suddenly adulthood. Suddenly I was that budgie who had fallen out of the nest. And I had no clue what to do. Except I was pretty sure it involved RESPONSIBILITY, and that is a big word for a budgie.

I am not black, but I was told being a woman was close enough. It was ‘another minority’.

What was printed on the visa was probably the nicest thing anyone has ever said about me: ‘Alien with extraordinary ability’. If you’d told me that’s what I’d grow up to be when I was eleven, I’d have taken that.
