The song was written in 1861 by a friend of one of the dead rioters. Attempts to rewrite or replace it as the official state song were made in 1974, 1980, 1984, 2001, 2002, 2009, 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2020. These efforts finally succeeded in 2021.
