Illusory correlation, as this fallacy is called, was first shown in a famous set of experiments by the psychologists Loren and Jean Chapman, who wondered why so many psychotherapists still used the Rorschach inkblot and Draw-a-Person tests even though every study that had ever tried to validate them showed no correlation between responses on the tests and psychological symptoms.
