I’m tired, I’m angry, and worst of all, I’m hangry. I could eat a horse and chase the rider.
“Are you staying in the same room? What happens when you need to take a crap?” I open my mouth to speak but no words come out. “What happens if you fart, or snore . . . or . . .” She throws her hands up in dismay. “Dribble in your sleep? This is a logistical nightmare, Kate. You can’t impress a man with a week-long stayover.”
“I want to see what you looked like on film before you piggyback me up to the top.” I laugh. “Angel, if you want to fall spectacularly down this mountain and die, let me carry you.”
We kiss and hold each other and, with an intimacy I’ve never known, she takes me. And holds me. And ruins me forever.
The sight of Elliot Miles running down the pathway with a bunch of ducks chasing him is simply too much and I nearly fall over as I laugh hard.
“This isn’t fucking funny, Kathryn,” he yells, and he kicks out to try and move them and they squawk louder. “Fuck off, ducks!”
In the darkness, in her arms, I listen to her heartbeat. And I lose sight of mine.
The man turns to me. “Hello. I’m Mathew, the vet.” “Oh.” Relief fills me. A trace of a smile crosses Elliot’s face; he knows who I thought it was, a hired goat hitman.
