Piper remembered what life had been like before she became a prisoner to her panic attacks, and she worked harder to get that life back.
It wasn’t just physical either. Sure, she and Chloe had great chemistry, but Piper felt comfortable with her. They shared an easy rapport that usually took Piper months to settle into.
“I’m not afraid of sea creatures as long as I can see them.” “That sounds like a good life policy in general,”
“Sometimes I feel like we’ve known each other forever, and then I remember I barely know you, because…are you out? I’d really like to kiss you right now.”
Everyone is an amateur paparazzo with their cell phones these days.”
It wasn’t an uncomfortable silence, though. On the contrary, the emotional truths they’d shared seemed to bring them closer together.
“I don’t know,” Piper told her honestly. “I like you a lot, and I’d really like to see you again. I don’t know what we could pull off, relationship-wise, with you living in North Carolina and me in New York, but I’m willing to try if you are.”
but I don’t have any regrets. It’s been an amazing opportunity.”
“It’s painful, but I still like to talk about her.”
“I had always been half of a pair. Sometimes I think I’m still learning how to be my own person.”
but she couldn’t help being glad—ridiculously glad—that they were at least going to try.
This long-distance thing might not always be fun, but for tonight it was. She was already looking forward to Thursday.
“Ariana’s going to have her work cut out for her, covering that rosy glow in your cheeks so you look like an unconscious gunshot victim.”
and she was halfway smitten with Sam Whitaker and one hundred percent smitten with the woman who brought her to life.
Could she handle having a famous girlfriend? She really, really hoped so.
Chloe’s stomach began to fizz like she’d just guzzled a bottle of champagne, drunk off the sight of her.
Piper rose to greet her, pressing her lips against Chloe’s for a kiss that increased all the fizzing inside her. Yep, she was smitten all right.
She didn’t necessarily want to share Piper tonight, or to put her in a situation that might cause her anxiety.
She’d halfway convinced herself that Piper would lose interest in her once they left the Caymans.
She’d gone home and googled Piper. She’d swooned over red carpet photos of her in stunning couture gowns and binge watched her TV show, and now she was slightly intimidated by the knowledge she’d gained.
“And you are badass in an ‘out actress in an industry where it could still hurt you and facing your fears on a daily basis’ kind of way.”
“I like to escape reality when I read.”
“I read lesbian romance, yes,” Piper said. “It’s definitely a thing, but I read straight romance too. You know I’m bisexual, right?”
“I’m a lesbian, but I couldn’t care less what genders you’re attracted to, as long as women are on the list.”
“In fact, when you’re around, you are the only person on my list.”
“But there’s also something exhilarating about traveling thousands of miles in a day and getting paid to do it.”
Well, cereal, and pretty much everything Piper-related.
Their long-distance relationship was off to a seamless start. Piper felt happier than she had in years, and she knew she had Chloe to thank for it.
For whatever reason, she never felt the need to hide her anxiety from Chloe the way she often did with her family and coworkers. Maybe because Chloe never made a fuss about it, which was calming in and of itself.
How had she gotten this attached to Piper so quickly?
She’d been too busy flying all over the world, trying desperately to figure out who she was without Cassie.
her stomach had dipped when she read about Piper’s panic attack, but she was so relieved the audition had gone well.
In honor of her newly improved mood, she treated herself to a cheeseburger and a chocolate milkshake.
Not Cassie’s twin or Cait’s aunt or Piper’s girlfriend.
“I’m so proud of you, Piper. This is going to be so amazing for your career.”
For some reason, it turned Piper on to think about Chloe reading smutty Clairantha fanfic.
“One thing at the time. First, get on the subway without having to worry about anyone recognizing you.”
bursting with pride at the way she’d pushed through her fear to get on that train.
but not here on a public street after Piper had just ridden the subway for the first time in months to bring them to the bar where they’d met.
The bar’s lavender logo gleamed like a welcome beacon, the promise of a safe place for them to enjoy a drink without any peripheral worry about being harassed or judged for being together.
Maybe it would feel more real after she’d spent the day on set with her tomorrow.
Had it been midnight the last time they were here? Was it midnight now?
While the idea of falling in love this year had seemed unlikely to the point of absurd last month, it didn’t feel that way now. In fact, she had a feeling she was well on her way.
But now I feel like I’m making out with Sam Whitaker in her bedroom, and this feels like some sort of secret fantasy brought to life.”
Piper’s head was spinning. A moment ago, she’d been rushing toward her dressing room to role play with Chloe, and now…now she was celebrating one of the biggest moments in her career. She looked at Chloe, who was beaming, not looking at all upset that their plans had been interrupted. Turning back to Jane, she nodded. “Yeah, that would be great. I just…wow.”
It was almost like having a panic attack, except the emotions paralyzing her now were all good, all happy, all ecstatic.
That fizzing sensation still hadn’t gone away. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt this light on her feet.
And having Chloe with her tonight to celebrate just felt like the icing on her already overly delicious cake.
I don’t know how to figure out our geographical challenges, and it seems like it’s only going to get harder from here on out.”
“It does, but Jane was right about one thing. I can afford as many flights as we need to see each other. We’ll make it work, Chloe. If you want to, that is.”
