She’d halfway convinced herself that Piper would lose interest in her once they left the Caymans. Surely she met more exciting people through her work than Chloe.
“He moved to LA,” Piper said as she tried to shove another mismatched piece into the puzzle. “And we decided long distance would be too much work.” “Oh,” Chloe said quietly. “I was heartbroken about it at first, but I guess deep down, I knew he wasn’t the one,” Piper said, “or we would have tried harder to make it work.” Which meant she did think Chloe was worth that effort. Tears welled in her eyes as she gripped Piper’s hands and pulled her in for a kiss.
She went into the kitchen to help her mom with dinner, annoyed to see the chicken roasting in the oven. Yes, she’d initially become a vegetarian as a way of rebelling against her parents, but it was an important part of her lifestyle now, so it was frustrating when her mom still acted like it was a teenage whim. “I’ve got a tofu dish as a side,” her mom said. “And bread.” “That’s fine,” Piper told her. Her trainer had her on a strict diet this week anyway, but she wished her mom didn’t always relegate her to a side dish. Would it have been so hard to cook a meatless meal tonight, the way
