It was literally hotter than Hell. I’d know.
“I, uh, I don’t do the mate thing. Polite pass.”
“Roxanne, do you mind getting me another gin?” I asked. “It’ll be nice to have something to wash down these . . .” Boat-looking things. Folded sandwich? What the hell are these? “Tacos,” she said, giving me a weird look. “Jesus, you really are from up north. Don’t even know what a taco is,” she mumbled as she went back to the bar.
I closed my eyes and tried to remember all those anger management classes I’d taken in the Afterlife. Remember what Vlad the Impaler, my sponsor, had said. Count to ten. Then stab. In hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have picked one of the most notorious demons as my mentor.
Well, at least my kidnapper was a gentleman. That had to count for something.
I’d thought I needed a miracle to end the conversation. Turns out I just needed to be poisoned. Good. I hope it killed me. I had a bone to pick with Duke, and I needed answers.
“Kill me now,” I muttered to Roxanne, and I was dead serious.
