As soon as they’re out of sight, Reagan jumps away from me. “Sorry.” Yeah, so am I. Sorry that she’s no longer touching me.
“You were usually standing on the opposite side of the deck, not paying me any attention,” she whispers. There’s no malice in her tone, but I still feel like an idiot for not noticing. I lean down until my lips hover near hers. “I’m paying attention now.”
“I’m just grabbing a pitcher for the table and then I’ll leave you be.” “Stay. I don’t mind talking to you.”
“Now you’re just buttering me up.” “Is it working?” His grin is boyish and charming. Like I could ever say no to him. “Yes. Okay. I’m in.” Seize the freaking day.
“I promised Dakota I’d go watch her play spikeball tonight.” When a pang of disappointment hits at hearing she has plans, I realize that I may be more into this than I even realized.
“That was before.” “Before what?” “Before I knew you liked me. This changes everything.” I squeeze her hand and force myself to take a step back.
I’m thinking back to all the times we hung out, searching for more hints, and replaying her actions with this new knowledge. Man, I hate missing things and I definitely missed this.
“Flattery will get you everywhere,” she says, and I make a vow to do a lot more of it.
His hand covers my mouth, and I squeak my surprise. He chuckles and removes his hand. “Sorry, that was a dick move. I didn’t mean to cut you off. It’s just… I really want to kiss you and you’re making it hard to find a second to dive in.” I slam my lips together. He’s looking at me like he’s waiting for me to say something else. “Yeah, never speaking again,” I whisper.
“Couldn’t get a word in.” I hide behind my hands. He laughs and slides my hands away from my face. “It was adorable.”
“Their sex life.” Heath grins. “Implies it’s going to continue.” Fuck yeah, it’s going to continue.
I pull her to her feet and kiss her. Crazy. I still can’t believe we’re kissing now. This is a thing. We kiss. A lot. And it’s fire.
“I forgot to ask about your day.” “My day?” Her laughter is the best damn sound. “My day was good. How was yours?” “Better now.” “We’re not going to be able to hide from them forever.” “I’m not hiding. I just want you to myself.” I bite down on her neck, and she squeals and laughs.
“It’s okay. Really. You don’t owe me any explanations. I’m perfectly content not labeling this and hanging out. You want to break your routine, and I just want to spend more time together.” “That’s the thing, though. I’m not sure I’m okay not labeling it.”
Carefully, I get into bed, trying not to wake him. One arm reaches around my waist and pulls me tight against his chest. His nose nuzzles into my hair, and he places a kiss on my neck. “’Night, beautiful.”
We’re spending every night together, I think about her during the day, and it still doesn’t feel like enough. I want to be with her all the time. I don’t want to date anyone else, and I sure as hell don’t want her to date anyone else. I should probably mention that.
Reagan’s wearing my hockey sweatshirt. It’s huge on her, but she is working it. My clothes have never looked so good. I tip my head at her, and a shy smile pulls at her lips.
“I want you. The rest isn’t all that important.” “Then maybe it is all about me. I want you to be mine in every way. I want to do boyfriend things for you. Take you on dates, walk you home, make you oatmeal in the mornings.”
“I’m serious. I’m better with you. I really like you. This time is…. Fuck, I hate to say it’s different, but it is. And, yeah, it’s because you’re different, which I know you’re going to roll your eyes about, but you make me different, too.
“Yes.” “Really?” I scoop her up. She nods. “Yeah, really. You’re kind of hard to say no to. Kiss me, stud.” “That’s boyfriend to you.”
Stupid things that don’t change how I feel about her, but just peel back more layers and remind me what an idiot I was not to notice her before.
“Either way, it should be entertaining.” I cross my arms over my chest. “Let’s take it from the top of scene two where you enter from stage right.” She nods, opens her mouth as if she’s going to deliver her first line, and then looks straight at me. “Wait, how do you know…” “You left a copy of the script in my room.” I hop down from the wall back onto the ice and skate toward her. “It’s a great part. You’re gonna kill it.”
We head over to the guys’ place. Maverick is the first to see me. He drops the controller in his hand onto his lap. “Woah, Reagan sweetheart, I think you just became the starring role in my dream later.” “Hot, right?” Ginny asks as she sits next to Heath on the couch. He gives me a thumbs up. “So hot,” Mav mutters and keeps staring. “You’re a rocket.” Adam walks out, adjusting his tie. I think he tells Maverick to fuck off, but I’m too busy ogling my handsome boyfriend in a suit and tie. “Hey.” His gaze finally lands on me and drops slowly. “Fucking hell.”
Adam hangs at the back of our friends. After everyone else has hugged me, he steps forward. “Congratulations. You were amazing. I am in awe of you.” “Thank you.”
“I just started seeing this girl.” I meet Reagan’s eyes. “A talented, beautiful actress. She couldn’t fix a broken arm or do anything that she’d think is heroic, but she is the single bravest person I know. The core of who she is reminds me a lot of that doctor from long ago. She inspires me every day to pay it forward. Ten thousand people, but none of them have made me feel like her.” I lock my gaze on hers. “I love you, Reagan. I have fallen in love with you. Ten thousand people, but I just want you.”
“You stole the show and my line. I love you too, Adam. You’re worth risk. We’re worth it.”
Things are looking up, Cancer. Especially in the bedroom. Expect mind-blowing orgasms on the regular. “Did you write this?” I ask as I reread Adam’s text with what I can only guess is my daily horoscope. “Of course, I did. A lot more where that came from too. Every day, baby.”
“I almost forgot to give you your birthday card.” He reaches into his back pocket and pulls out a red piece of paper. “You made it?” I ask as I take it from him. The construction paper is cut into a perfect heart shape. He grins as I unfold it. Reagan, My heart is yours. Marry me? Adam
Of course, she knew because Adam thinks of everything, and if he were going to ask anyone for permission to marry me, it’d be her. She’s my family. And now he is too.
