Market capitalists and socialists are both equally irritated by “freeloaders”—they just zero in their animosity toward different kinds of freeloaders. Thus socialists demonize the idle rich, while capitalists tend to save their scorn for the “idle poor.” That people of all political stripes now distinguish between the makers and takers, producers and parasites, even if they define the categories somewhat differently, might suggest that the conflict between the industrious and idle in our societies is a universal one.
