Good things come from hard work, Baby. This is what we do,” she’d said.
“Now don’t take this the wrong way, but I think it’s time I start looking for an upgrade.”
“I want him to see everything he can no longer have. Let Project Upgrade begin.”
“None of us has confidence one hundred percent of the time, Savs. Sometimes, you just have to fake it till you make it.”
“You said it best yourself, Jason.” She straightened, lifting her chin to look him in the eye. “Time for an upgrade.”
she had smooth, bronzed skin and narrow brown eyes. She removed her glasses. A sprinkling of freckles ran over the bridge of her nose, and a deep dimple pierced her right cheek. With full lashes and high cheekbones,
big dark curls
Her hair hung to the middle of her back in long layers,
Savvy over here tryin’ to be all mature about this shit. I’m prepared to be ignorant enough for the both of us, girl.”
chunky cinnamon bob, a heavy swoop bang framing the top of her glasses. It was just long enough to squeeze into a ponytail, per her instructions.
They had a tradition of exchanging refrigerator magnets displaying motivational quotes or beautiful scenic views—souvenirs of the challenges they’d battled together and messages appreciating each other throughout the journey.
“Keep calm and yogi on,”
Fine as he is, he could pitch a tent in your backyard, and I wouldn’t be mad.”
large cinnamon cappuccino and a streusel-topped blueberry muffin,
“Never tell Maggie what she wants or how she feels. She will immediately double down to smash whatever doubts or limitations she thinks someone placed upon her.”
“Now take a moment to honor yourselves and this step forward in your practice. Let go of what didn’t work, where you struggled, where you weren’t perfect. Honor yourself, thank yourself, accept yourself where you are right now.” That last line struck a chord deep inside, and Savvy’s eyes welled with tears. “You could have stayed home today, but instead, you came to yoga this morning, you put in the work, and you worked hard. Forgive yourself for whatever you believe went wrong. Accept yourself in this moment. Be generous to yourself today.”
Accept yourself in this moment.
“How about you try to achieve your closeout deadline. If we have to ask Savvy to get you caught up yet again—” his
tone sharpened “—you won’t be here to thank her when she’s finished.”
“You is smart, you is kind, you is important!”
Appealing to Maggie’s competitive nature was the button Joan and Savvy loved to push. Maggie Hulk-smashed on anyone who doubted her ability to win.
“Let’s make the goal for you to love yourself exactly where you are right now. No matter what change you make to the exterior, Savvy, you are who you are on the inside. The outsides are just window dressings.”
“You’re like the Yoda of good food.
“Slow is just fine. Too fast, and Teddy might steal you away from me altogether.”
You can’t stand by and wait for him to figure it out, especially because he seems to have no concern for the fact that he’s hurting you. That’s not a man you wait for, Savvy. He needs to grow up.”
“I want for you to be happy. You deserve that, whatever that looks like.”
“I signed up for you, Savvy. Just as you are. You’re beautiful.”
“Then I’ll compliment you until you believe that I mean it, because I do.”
“Never get between a woman and her ’do.”
I will not allow myself to feel guilty for self-indulgence or self-care. I will live in the moment and spoil myself if I so choose. I will not be concerned with anyone’s timeline or expectations but my own. Before Savvy takes care of everyone else, Savvy takes care of Savvy.
These folks need to choose life, because I am not the one.”
“I don’t want you to have to leave before I wake up. It always make me feel like some sleazy hookup when you sneak out. Let me walk Teddy with you in the morning. Besides, I can finally see proof that you’re not homeless.”
“Well, don’t do anything we wouldn’t do!” Mags arched her back a little, making a kissy face. “But don’t forget to arch that back, ho!”
