“Absolutely not. Baby steps. Today, we’re practicing right here, nowhere else.” Blowing out a heavy breath, I nodded. “Okay. Now what?” “Press your left foot down on the clutch, your right on the brake.” I did. “Okay.” “Now, start the engine. And put your hand on the stick.” I arched a brow at him. “Is that code for something?” “My, oh my, Miss Savoie. What a dirty mind you have. Get your head out of the gutter and focus. And wrap your hand around my stick.”
Damn, this man. If someone had told me I’d let a guy teach me to drive after he’d once hit me with his car, I’d have told them they’d lost their damn mind.
“I got it,” I told him, pressing the clutch and brake to the floor and restarting the car before easing in the opposite direction of the other car. “Yeah, you got it. I knew you would.” That’s when I finally chanced a glance at him, and my insides melted at the blazing look of pride and adoration on his handsome face.
“You overcame a lifelong fear in minutes, Isadora. You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for.”
“Don’t tell me we don’t match,” he ground out against my lips, squeezing my nape. “Don’t tell me this is just sex.”
Whatever this was—this connection, this craving, this obsession—it went beyond the physical. I knew that, which was why I was trying to build a little distance. But Devraj would have none of it. He wanted all of me for the time we were together. And I honestly couldn’t deny him. Not anymore.
My heart pounded hard against his chest where I could feel his own. I pressed a palm there, willing to surrender all to him. He was more than sex. But I still couldn’t say it aloud. Somehow, I knew that would make it that much harder when this assignment was over and he was off to the next.
“Definitely again.” He kissed me hard. “And again.” He nipped down my jaw to my ear. “I’m never letting you go.” And for one blissful moment, I believed him.
“Rohypnol.” “That would definitely make his victims go quietly from the places he abducted them.” Because they’d likely be unconscious. Yet, he was still using it on them during captivity. The women were likely still fighting back. Good.
“I wish it was Saturday. Time to catch this asshole,” Ruben ground out, his eyes stormy blue. “Are you ready, Isadora? Still want to do this?” My sweet girl looked at each and every one of us hardass vampires, resolve set in the upward tilt of her chin. “Damn right, I’m ready.”
If I wasn’t aware yet, I knew then and there that I was deeply and wholly in love with this woman. Once this operation was over with, I’d make damn sure she understood I wasn’t going anywhere.
“His eyes are burning a hole through you.” “Awesome. Now I want to throw up.”
“It was so good to see you again!” she yelled, opening her arms for me. I gave her a big hug. She whispered in my ear, “Now go get those mother fuckers.” Then she pulled away, laughing wildly like I’d said something hysterically funny. “We’ll catch up next month.”
I couldn’t live without her. There was no doubt of it now.
“You better be scared, motherfucker.”
He seemed pleased and impressed by my carnage. Not sure what to think other than I liked this grim.
“You seem to care quite a bit about our sister, Devraj,” said Livvy, her big blue eyes focused on the way I had one hand on Isadora’s cheek, the other spread across the blanket over her torso. “Because he does,” said Violet on a heavy exhale. Evie, Livvy, and Jules all swiveled their heads to her. Violet just shrugged. “What? I’m a Seer. They belong to each other.” At that moment, I loved that foul-mouthed sister almost as much as I loved Isadora.
Violet grabbed my arm as I passed her. “Where are you going, Stygorn?” I glanced back, recognizing that sting in my sternum for what it was. The clenching of my heart. The longing to be with this woman for all time. I huffed out a breath and turned back to Violet. “Need to take care of some things.” Then I gave Violet a wink. “So she knows I’m all in.” Her eyes gleamed, sparkling with her Seer magic, as she smirked. “It’s about fucking time.”
“Yes indeed. Once you’ve got a good man, girl, you don’t let him go.”
“Apparently, Ruben knows a grim who has this technology I wasn’t aware of before all of this.” “Oh,” piped up Clara. “The cute one who’s always on the corner of Ruben’s bookstore?” Cute? The grim I’d seen hanging on that corner was seriously dark and mysterious, striking in his sharp features. I’d never describe him as cute.
When I closed the door to the bathroom, I shed my clothes and stood under the steaming hot shower, wondering how I was going to pretend I was fine when he said goodbye. I couldn’t handle it. I just couldn’t.
I tried to wipe away the sorrow of losing him, but it was too painful. How had I not seen that Devraj meant far more to me than I’d ever realized? The thought of him really and truly leaving made me want to curl into a ball and forget the world. Somehow, the fact that he lived this flashy, glamorous life didn’t matter anymore. Maybe he’d be okay with visiting? We could do long distance perhaps. At this point, I was okay taking whatever he’d give me.
Then music blared from the front yard. Loud music. I jumped and turned on the stool. Clara let go of my damp hair. “What the hell?” I asked, staring out the open balcony doors. “Is that—? Is that Peter Gabriel?” “Sounds like ‘In Your Eyes.’ Might want to check that out,” she said sweetly.
There, standing in my yard, wearing jeans, a white T-shirt, and a gray trench coat was Devraj. Over his head, he held high Archie, who saw me and yipped happily, his stubby tail wagging right over where Devraj supported his bum with one hand. My mouth dropped open as the eighties anthem from the most romantic boombox serenade pumped out into the neighborhood. Walkers had even begun to gather, watching the spectacle. “What are you doing!” I yelled down at the beautiful man holding his dog over his head. “Come down here, love,” he said just loud enough for me to hear, his smile blinding and

“I don’t need that.” “What do you need, Isadora?” His mouth was an inch from mine, his chocolate eyes pleading, imploring. “Tell me what you need, and I’ll give it to you. Anything.” Lacing
He swept me close, banding an arm around my waist and kissed me deep. Like he craved me. Like he cared. Like he couldn’t do without me. Like he loved me.
I barely heard the hoots and applause from my sisters and the crowd that had gathered over the pounding of my heart and the rush of emotion. New Orleans was the kind of place where people wanted to share in each others’ joy. And today, it seemed, they were all sharing in mine. In ours. In this moment where I let go of all my fears and let my heart have what it wanted.
“I was wrong about us not being a match.” He chuckled, holding me tighter, smiling against my lips. “I know, love.” Another soft kiss. “I was just waiting for you to figure it out. But I couldn’t wait anymore.” “I’m sorry it took me so long.” Then his face sobered as he pulled the cuff bracelet from his wrist, the one that had been the wedding necklace his father had given his mother. My mouth fell open because I knew what he was doing. Again, I could hardly draw a breath. “Will you take this and wear it as a promise? Until I can get you a proper ring? Until I can wrap you in your own

“Get you some,” yelled Tia.
“You’re letting me into your mysterious, hallowed bedroom?” His smile softened, his expression serious. “I love you, Isadora. You’re already into my everything.”
“Uhhh, I lost a bet.”
“This is for all the single ladies.” “Yeah, baby!”
Devraj didn’t make me braver, but he showed me that I was. I should go for my dreams, let my worries and doubts and fears take a backseat.
“They might try to drag you into some Savoie sister family meeting. And you’re mine tonight.” He lifted me in his arms and headed for the door. “I can walk, you know.” “Where’s the fun in that?”
“What’s the big plans tonight?” “They entail my bed and no clothes. And Big John.” He quirked a naughty smile when I laughed. “And no work or gardening or shelter plans tomorrow. We’re sleeping in, and I’m feeding you every meal in bed.” I smiled, sweeping a lingering kiss on his neck, relishing the shiver I gave him. “I feel so privileged. Taken to your bedroom and everything.” He pinched my ass. I yelped. “Keep it up, and you won’t leave my bedroom. Ever.” “Promise?” Then he was all Devraj smiles and Devraj eyes, heated and intense. “Promise, love.”
