Cris strode eagerly after, careful not to overtake her. It was pleasing to trail behind a woman who walked like she had places to be and people to kill.
She was flirtatious and conniving and heart-stopping. He adored her, of course.
To be honest, Dimity resented his instructing her to do something she was already contemplating, because she did want a husband and family and she didn’t think there was anything wrong with that. It was simply his tone and the way he said it, all patronizing. Perhaps she should fleece him for a small diamond bracelet or two, simply for revenge on the universe for having to put up with him.
Cris resisted a mad inclination to flex. It was nice to be appreciated, even if it was mostly as food.
“The working of your mind is a thing of great beauty and profound horror.” “Why, thank you. What a nice thing to say!” Dimity was thrilled.
She’d always been rather proud of her hair, having grown it herself, as it were.
