All pallas cats were ruthless, but Paxton? There’d been a cruel, sadistic quality to his bloodthirstiness. “People who enjoy killing generally don’t just stop.”
His broody, watchful eyes scanned the store. When those two bottomless pools of dark ink landed on her, her body responded—no, melted.
“I’ll clip it on,” Alex said. No, declared. His smoky, whiskey-drinker’s voice feathered over her skin and ignited her senses.
“Close the door.” Damn, that authoritative tone hit her right in her core.
Because he’d beat the absolute living shit out of Mateo, just as he’d beaten the living shit out of any other guys who’d upset her over the years. Besides … “Why would I tell you? We’re not friends. We don’t confide in each other.” “We’re not friends, no. We’re more than that. I think of you as—” “Don’t say you think of me as ‘family,’ because that would be a humungous freaking lie. Or are you too much of a pussy to admit it?”
Bree Dwyer was as pretty and shiny as the bling that surrounded her daily.
He’d missed it. He always found himself greedy for more of it.
The animal was a cranky, sullen creature, but he turned into a damn flirt whenever she was nearby.
He often told himself he didn’t share his beast’s possessiveness of her. He was often full of shit.
Alex didn’t admire a lot of people, but he admired Bree Dwyer.
Call him weird, but that princess-to-peasant look made him want to bend her over his office desk.
“Oh, that’s exactly what would have happened if I had been plastered that night, baby girl—don’t think differently. You still make that husky little noise right before you come?”
He clenched his teeth again. “One night in your bed wouldn’t cut it for me. I’d want more. I’d take more.”
“You’re not nice to Mommy,” Emilia pointed out. “She tried to kill me in the womb.” Mila snarled. “I did not do that.”
“It’s not his business.” “I don’t think he’s gonna like it. Not at all.” “Which isn’t my problem.”
Elle shook her head. “When you’re not looking, he sometimes stares at you with a covetous glint in his eye. It’s kind of sad that his brother—your actual true mate—had no interest in you whereas his twin feels the opposite.”
“I see you’re trying to appeal to my better nature. Wasn’t it you who once told me that I didn’t have one?”
The mattress dipped beside her, and a hand lightly stroked her hair. She almost flinched in surprise. Alex very rarely touched her. When he did, his touches were always fleeting and impersonal. Never deliberate or … soothing.
“Good girl.” “Fuck off,” she uttered,
He made a gruff sound. “I detest you a lot less than I detest the rest of the population.”
They slowed but didn’t stop. When one of them got too close to the sleeping pallas cat, the wolverine snapped his teeth in warning. The female stumbled to a halt, breathing hard.
Licking its bloody muzzle, the wolverine padded over to the unconscious cat and stood over her like a sentry.
He does not like to be away from you.” Valentina sipped her tea. “Did you know he calls to check on you while he is roaming?”
His grin widened. “They will. But you look good for someone who—” He froze only one step into the hallway as he spotted Alex leaning against the kitchen countertop, his cell phone in one hand and a carton of orange juice in the other … looking right at home.
The truth? Each male recognized that the other wanted Bree, and so neither had any time for the other. Alex’s beast loathed the shithead on principle.
“Will you give him a shot?” Even Alex heard the note of barely contained menace in his voice, so it didn’t surprise him that she tensed.
“That’s not an answer.” Alex prowled toward her, liking the sound of her pulse spiking. “Will you give him a shot, Bree?” he pressed. She lifted her chin. “Do I need to remind you that that’s none of your business?” A growl rattled his chest.
Alex cupped her jaw and put his face close to hers. “You’re very much my business, ...

Alex feasted on that taste that had haunted him for six fucking years.
He’d come here tonight for this, and he knew it. Accepted it.
Have you never noticed that his moods sort of … bounce off yours?”
Dani’s mouth fell open. “Have you no ethics at all?” “I have some. They sleep a lot.”
The deep growl that rattled in his chest and sawed at his throat was a feral thing.
“You’re not. Going. Anywhere.” His eyes changed as his beast pushed close to the surface.
“I held you like this while you rode my dick last night, didn’t I? I collared you the entire time. I squeezed just a little when I sensed you were close to coming. Just like that, you fucking exploded.” He gave her throat a light squeeze; her pupils swallowed the color of her eyes. “My baby likes it a little rough, don’t you?”
His eyes smiling, he rubbed his nose against hers. “Baby girl, if you wanted a guy you could manage, you should have picked one of your own kind. You didn’t; that was your mistake. Now you need to learn to deal with me.”
