More than twenty thousand Strand readers canceled their subscriptions immediately, and young men and women appeared on the streets in, respectively, black armbands and veils. They were in mourning, not for the demise of a popular serial character, but for the collapse of a dam of justice and reason in a rising tide of incompetence and evil.
