When the freshman kid next to me bumps me and then offers to let me blow him as an apology, Harley threatens to stab him with the butter knife. I’ve never seen a guy piss himself over breakfast cutlery so quickly.
“Did you like your present, Mounty?” Avery grins down at her phone. “She hasn’t even opened it, Morrison.” The smirk falls off of his face. “Why not?” I sigh and push my plate away. “I don’t want to have things bought for me.” Blaise frowns and hurt flashes in his eyes. “It was a thank you, Mounty. Jesus, I wasn’t bribing you.” I shrug and take a bite of my apple. “Most people say thank you with words. I don’t want your money.”
“She threw a tantrum at me last week for buying new sheets for her bed because I hated the color of the other ones. She’s as weird about money as Harley is.”
He’s texting under the table as he eats his toast, his tattoo flexing over his jaw looking lickable. Wow. Mind out of the gutter, Anderson.
When classes are over for the day and I get to our room, Avery texts to say Harley caught Blaise talking to Annabelle again and she has to go tear him apart. She asks to borrow my knife to hammer home the message and I start to wonder what Harley told him to get him to risk the fury of Avery to distract her for me.
No glare, no questions, no argument. I’m going to have to break the news to Avery that aliens have taken over her beloved brother’s body.
He doesn’t check the contents like Diarmuid did, that would be a grave insult to me. Even the Crow is cautious of what I can do.
I’m helping Ash get his head out of his ass. I see how much you’re doing for us. I see how much Avery means to you. I see that you’re one of us. He needs to open his eyes and see it too. Fuck, even Morrison sees it and he’s usually too far up his own ass jotting down morbid love poems to see anything.
“You may have tied his hands but you haven’t tied mine. Push me and I’ll show you that being a Beaumont only gets you so far in this world.”
I think I’m going to join Harley in celibacy because I haven’t found a pussy yet that’s worth dealing with Avery’s lectures.”
I gulp. Harley showering in my bathroom. Harley getting naked in my bathroom. Harley naked. Sweet lord.
“I don’t need frostbite on my nipples. Come to a party in the summer with me and I’ll wear the other outfit again.” Wait, what? What am I saying? I’ve lost my damn mind.
I’ve never owned one so fuck knows what it’s called.
Oh fuck. I’m about to be thrown in the middle of relationship drama. Avery’s going to be pissed.
He hasn’t let go of my hand. I tried to tug it back and he glared down at me like I was wounding him. Fucking guys.
“Friends of yours?” he whispers into my ear. Joey has seriously misjudged who I am.
“I’m here to go to school, not start a war. Head home, boys. Hannaford isn’t the place for you.” Daniel takes off from the clearing, damn near running toward his car. Trenton hesitates before shaking Harley’s hand and bowing his head at me, respectfully. The entire crowd of students watch in silence as they walk away. When the car starts and peels away Joey speaks.
“Who the fuck are you, Mounty?” I grin and lift the bottle of whiskey to my lips, “Maybe you should watch yourself until you know, Beaumont. I did warn you.”
His eyes stay fixed on mine as he reaches down to unbutton his jeans and my entire body spontaneously combusts.
Dammit. Damn him to hell, he’s being fucking reasonable. How can I argue with that?!
Well, if he isn’t the most confusing guy on the freaking planet I don’t know who is,
“Nope. No. We’ll stop. If you can’t kiss me without grinding on my dick like that we have to stop.”
He scoffs at me and I swear he mumbles, “I had to get your attention somehow.” But that doesn’t make any sense to my whiskey-soaked brain so I brush it off.
Ash does a double take when he sees my face. Fuck, do I have toothpaste on my chin or something? He stands and takes off without a word. What the fuck is going on?
I refuse to blush. I refuse but my body doesn’t listen. Fuck.
I know who had the self-control that night and it certainly was not me. I had the raging hormones and the soaked panties. I had taut nipples and gyrating hips but I definitely did not have any sort of restraint.
“I think he’s made some assumptions about who you are. Every time he gets close to figuring you out you throw him a new secret and he has to start all over.”
He’s married, got kids, lives a white picket life while being a member of a criminal institution. It’s fucking weird.”
“Aves, he’s hot. He’s built, pretty, tattooed, and he’s not at all lacking in the dick department. I’d get half a mil easy.”
I blush and fidget in my seat. “We only kissed but I got close enough to him to know what he’s working with.” “Ugh, hand me some fucking brain bleach,” she snarls and picks up her phone.
When I say this to her, she smirks at me and tells me they all deserve to grovel at her feet for her affection.
Last night I pretended to be asleep already when Avery got home and she pretended to believe me which was very kind of her.
I don’t want to kill him but I do want to die.
“You’re such a hypocrite. You ran straight to Avery.”
“Arbour was defending his love. He thinks I’m trying to steal his girl out from under him and he can be a jealous shit.”
“I didn’t know he had a girl,” snipes Avery, filling my cup with marshmallows and drizzling the entire drink in chocolate syrup. It’s like a heart attack in a cup and I’m so fucking ready for it. Blaise grins and packs away his textbooks and notes. “Try telling him that. Have a good night, girls. I’ll see you both tomorrow.”
“You sound like a fucking stalker. Lay off a bit or she’ll realize how desperate you really are.”
“I snap at you because you piss me off. You get under my skin, you hurt me, you say stupid shit to me all the fucking time to get a rise out of me. But you don’t creep me out. I’m never worried about you taking things too far.”
“Are you blushing right now? What exactly has you swooning? The word asshole?”
“Shut up, Mounty, I’m not fucking swooning. No one has ever called me decent before and my reaction is one of shock. It doesn’t happen often so you wouldn’t have seen it before and don’t expect to see it again.”
“I’m not going. Harley didn’t even tell me they were on,” I say but I’m up and getting dressed as I say it. I know Avery won’t accept my answer.
“He’s your cousin, why do I have to be supportive?”
I look over at him, startled. “Didn’t Harley tell you?” Ash gives me an incredulous look. “He doesn’t tell us anything that involves you.”
They both blink at me then Ash says, “You asked his dealers to leave and they did?” I shrug. “I asked nicely.”
