For many of my generation, myself included, the dream of home ownership remains exactly that. We're forever being told home ownership is not a right and those doing the telling are usually those who hopped on the property ladder when you could buy your first home for less than six figures. They’re missing the point. It has nothing to do with a misguided sense of entitlement, but the need to put down roots. Security is a basic human right and the problem with renting is you never have that security — you live in a constant state of dependence on the landlord and we’re subject to their rules, their whims. It’s not that much different from the dependence we all had on our parents as kids. I swapped a bedroom for a flat, and my parent’s rules for my landlord’s rules.
