Sometimes, it felt like a scream was trapped in my throat, one that had been struggling to get free for the past twenty-two years. It had a voice, a body, fiery red hair, and a heart of steel.
“I hate you.” “I think about you.”
“Some men, Gianna . . . can’t feel their own music, let alone other’s.”
Mamma’s gaze grew wet, like mine. “Dance to this”—she pressed her hand to my heart—“whenever and however you want.” “Whenever I want?”

For better or for worse, this was the life I’d been given, and I was going to make the best of it.
He was cool, icy control. But something burned hot beneath the surface. Something shrouded by ice for so long. I wanted to watch it melt. To unravel him until I understood every layer.
