You don’t think the billionaires who own Wal-Mart can afford to pay a few more dollars per hour? Of course they can.” Who wins this debate? Not me. My interlocutor has made a fairness-and-compassion argument, invoking universal moral values. I made a money argument, which has no moral salience.
