On Sunday, December 4, 2016, a twenty-eight-year-old man named Edgar Maddison Welch told his wife and two daughters that he had some business to attend to and left the house.1 He got into his car and drove about six hours from his home in Salisbury, North Carolina, to a pizzeria in Washington, D.C.
