On the one hand, those voices know that, often, we haven’t a clue as to how to proceed. In that knowledge, we live with the fear of being unmasked as an impostor. But, on the other hand, the shame of our not knowing leads us to believe that everyone else does know; everyone else has it all figured out. Then we do something particularly clever: we turn our shameful fear into further evidence of our failings as leaders, as adults, as humans. So, we spin, we bullshit, and play along in the shell game in which the bean of truth keeps disappearing under swiftly shifting shells.
