In February 2016, when David Cameron was seeking concessions from Brussels in advance of the Brexit referendum, the Daily Mail, forgetting its own history of appeasement, brazenly compared him to Neville Chamberlain in a rabid front-page editorial headed, of course ‘Who will speak for England?’43 (While drawing these parallels between the Nazis and the EU, it added in the smaller print, ‘Nobody is suggesting there are any parallels whatever between the Nazis and the EU.’)
