One estimate suggested that India’s last election, in 2014, cost close to $5 billion.24 The contest was won handily by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party of current Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in large part because Modi managed to tap public anger about corruption, promising both economic renewal and an end to graft.
