It’s as though this dude is letting me know he still thinks I’m attractive despite being black American and not something more “exotic.” How patronizing and self-absorbed of him to think that I need or will only feel relief if I receive external reinforcement from a guy I barely know; furthermore, he’s participating in the racist and historically damaging fetishization that a black woman is only beautiful if she has a diverse background.
