Abou relayed his thoughts on the Bible with a freshness and insight that come from someone who hasn’t been inoculated with Bible stories since childhood—which often provides enough Bible familiarity to strip away the story’s power but not enough faith and application to positively affect. Abou was reading the Bible for the first time, but he articulated a truth that took me many trials, and miracles, to discover. Our stories are, at best, subplots to a larger one. We are just actors—maybe even extras—in a grander story than our own.
When we become aware of the larger story we are in, we can rise above self-focused interpretations of our stories. We can also transcend the interpretations of others. There may be truth in those interpretations. There may not be. Ultimately, we must find truth and interpret our life by understanding its place within God’s greater story.
