Thanks to The X-Files, UFO culture was prevalent at the time, with plenty of allegedly non-fiction supernatural books on offer too. I found the whole topic simultaneously exhilarating and terrifying. There was something deeply alluring about the idea of there being much more to life than I could currently comprehend, like there was something fantastically strange and dangerous out there, something shrouded in secrets and mystery.
